Answering the Call to Service
By: April Brown Bell, VITAL Chair

Attending my first-ever Neath the Wreath (NTW) on Friday, November 20, 2017, was a wonderful experience that reshaped how I viewed service, leadership, and solidarity. What began as a casual opportunity to support a good cause quickly became an awakening to the power of women coming together to uplift their community. The event revealed not only the organization’s deep impact but also the warmth, authenticity, and purpose that define its members. It was in that space that I realized I wanted to be part of the body of work that was transforming my local community.
One of the most appealing aspects of NTW was the atmosphere of collaboration and togetherness. The building was filled with women with diverse backgrounds, each contributing their unique strengths toward a shared mission.
The organization’s initiatives, from disrupting the cycles of economic insecurity to supporting survivors of domestic violence, demonstrated a unique approach to community service that aligned deeply with my own values. JLCC’s work was about empowerment and women serving as inspirational leaders for lasting, positive community change.
Beyond the cause itself, I was inspired by the volunteers that I met at the market. The women on the board and committees modeled the kind of integrity, courage, and inclusivity that I aspired to cultivate in my own life. Witnessing that energy motivated me to step up and actively contribute my time and skills. I realized that joining JLCC would allow me to grow personally while helping others do the same.
Ultimately, I chose to join because I believe in the ripple effect of service. By aligning with a group of driven, compassionate women, I knew I could help create change while finding a sense of belonging. Neat the Wreath opened my eyes to what’s possible when women unite with purpose. For me, it wasn’t just an event, it was an invitation to action. Joining the organization was my way of answering that call.
